- to develop pupils’ skills in dialogue speech and group work
- to widen pupils’ knowledge about English speaking writers
- to teach pupils to understand poetry
- to develop good taste
Equipment: a tape – recorder, cards, photos, pictures.
Procedure
I Introduction
T.Today we’ll have an unusual lesson. It won’t be a lesson. It will be a competition. Do you feel like a competition?
I’m sure you do.
We have learned much about English-speaking writers. Here you can see an exhibition of books by English and American authors. If you have free time I advise you to read them.
Well, during the breaks between the rounds you will hear the poems.
If we want to express some tender emotions or the best within us we turn to the poetry. That’s why it will be heard in class today.
So we begin our competition. You have been splitted into 2 teams: Team A, Team B. I’d like to introduce our jury: our English teachers.

For each correct answer you’ll get I point.
Team A: He is an American writer. He wrote wonderful poems and tales about his life and work. He travelled very much. He was awarded the Nobel prize.
Team B: He is an English poet. He left the country never to return. He took an active part in political life of the country. He liberated Italy and Greece.
Team A: He is an English writer and poet. He wrote many sonets. He was born in a rich family and got a good education. He was an actor in his own theatre.
Team B: He is not a poet. He is a writer. He loved nature. He wrote many stories about animals. He made some trips about Australia. He was a war correspondent.

YIII Listening and Comprehension
Charles Dickens, one of the greatest and most popular English novelist was born on the 7 th of February, 1812, in a small English town. He was a weak child and did not take part in noisy and active games. The little boy was very clever and learned to read at an early age, he read a lot of books in his childhood, when he was about six, someone took him to the theatre for the first time. He saw a play by Shakespeare and liked it so much that he decided to write a play of his own. When it was ready he performed it with some of his friends Everybody enjoyed the performance and the little writer felt very happy. When Dickens was nine years old, the family moved to London where they lived in an old house in the suburbs. They had a very hard life. There were several younger children in the family besides Charles. The future writer could not even go to school because at that time his father was in the Marshalsea Debtor’s Prison. Those were the most unhappy days of all Charles’ life. The boy worked from early morning till late at night to help his family.
Charles was only able to start going to school when he was nearly 12.
