We love London. It’s big and noisy and full of people. It is one of the most amazing and wonderful cities in the world. It’s not just one city, but lots of cities in one. It’s a historical city, a royal city, fashionable city and a great city to explore.

Every now and then the Thames would flood and parts of London would be covered in water. After a bad flood in 1953, people began to look for a way to control water levels. It took some time to find the answer, but in 1982 the Thames Barrier was opened. When its gates are raised they form a steel wall more than half a kilometre long, right across the Thames, stopping the flood water from reaching London.

City Limits

When the Romans built Londinium it was a lot smaller than it is today and they put a wall around it. This walled area was known as the City of London, and it still has that name today. The City has its own laws, its own police force, its own Lord Mayor, and governs itself separately from the rest of London.
The City was always the centre of business and money in London and this has not changed.
